Toby Walsh is Scientia Professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW Sydney. He has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science and of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. He has won several other awards including the NSW Premier’s Prize for Excellence in Engineering and ICT and the Humboldt Research Award. His book, “It’s Alive: AI from the Logic Piano to Killer Robots” was published in July 2017 by Black Inc.
Toby is a leading voice in the discussion around the societal impact of AI, and is a passionate advocate for limits to ensure AI is used to improve, not hurt, our lives. He was behind two open letters, one signed by thousands of AI researchers and the other by more than one hundred founders of AI and robotics companies calling upon the UN to take action on lethal autonomous weapons (aka “killer robots”). He has subsequently spoken on the topic at the United Nations in both New York and Geneva. His twitter account @TobyWalsh was voted one of the top ten to keep abreast of developments in AI.
